Astronomy Without Borders
Astronomy Without Borders is our initiative dedicated to making astronomy accessible to everyone, regardless of physical ability, age, or social context.
We design and deliver inclusive astronomy programs for seniors, people with visual, mobility, or cognitive disabilities, and communities with limited access to science and educational opportunities.
These experiences are carefully adapted to ensure that the universe can be explored in a way that is safe, engaging, and meaningful for every participant.
Accessibility Through Real Experience
Astronomy is often perceived as something distant or inaccessible. Our goal is to change that — by bringing the experience directly to people and adapting it to their needs.
Programs are designed to:
accommodate different mobility levels and physical conditions
adapt communication and explanation styles
create comfortable and inclusive environments
focus on shared experience rather than technical complexity
Whenever possible, we prioritise direct observation, because seeing the sky — even briefly — creates a powerful and lasting connection.
How We Adapt Our Programs
Each Astronomy Without Borders experience is adapted to the specific needs of the group. We focus on practical solutions that make the sky accessible in different ways, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all format.
Our programs are designed to work with a wide range of participants, including for example:
people with reduced mobility or wheelchair users
participants with visual impairments or low vision
individuals with cognitive or developmental differences such as autism spectrum conditions or learning difficulties
groups with attention-related needs, including participants who benefit from more dynamic or visual formats
seniors who may require a slower pace or more comfortable observation setups
Depending on the group, we adapt the experience through:
• Mobility adaptations – accessible observation setups, seated viewing options, and flexible positioning of equipment
• Visual support – high-contrast visuals, screen-based live views, and guided verbal descriptions of observations
• Cognitive accessibility – clear explanations, structured pacing, and flexible interaction formats
• Alternative observation methods – live projection from telescopes, allowing participants to observe comfortably without needing to remain at the eyepiece
• Daytime-focused programs – solar observations that are often easier to integrate and more accessible for many groups
We always work closely with organisers and caregivers to ensure that each program is appropriate, safe, and meaningful.
Every group is different — and every experience is adapted accordingly.
Day and Night Programs
Accessibility in astronomy is not limited to the night.
Our activities include:
• Daytime solar observations — safe, accessible, and often easier for many participants
• Night-sky experiences — adapted telescope observations and guided sky exploration
• Sensory and narrative-based formats — combining explanation, storytelling, and shared interaction
Programs are always adjusted to the group’s needs, environment, and level of support required.
Delivered Where It Matters
Astronomy Without Borders programs can take place:
• at care centres, community spaces, and institutions
• at partner locations and public venues
• at Finca Astronómica, when suitable for the group
We work closely with organisations to ensure the experience is logistically feasible, inclusive, and impactful.
A Shared Sky
The night sky belongs to everyone.
By creating opportunities for people who might not otherwise access astronomy, these programs go beyond education — they create moments of connection, curiosity, and perspective.
For many participants, this is not just an activity, but a rare experience of seeing something vast, beautiful, and universal.
