Messier Challenge — Imaging the entire Messier Catalogue from a single location
The Idea
Goal: capture all 110 Messier objects from one location near Cartagena.
This project is a long-term astrophotography challenge carried out at Finca Astronómica, focused on systematically imaging the full Messier Catalogue.
Rather than traveling between observatories, all observations are made from a single site — creating a consistent, real-world test of local sky quality.
Execution
Structured deep-sky imaging under real conditions.
Observations are carried out across multiple nights throughout the year, following seasonal visibility of Messier objects.
Each target is captured using astrophotography techniques adapted to:
- local atmospheric conditions
- light pollution levels
- object altitude and timing
The project prioritizes consistency and repeatability over ideal conditions, reflecting what is realistically achievable in this region.
Why This Matters
Most astrophotography projects rely on:
• multiple locations
• travel to darker sites
• highly selective conditions
This project takes a different approach:
One location, over time
If completed, the project will demonstrate that the Cartagena region allows for:
- full Messier Catalogue observation
- consistent deep-sky imaging
- viable astrophotography conditions without relocation
It serves as a practical benchmark for:
- astronomy tourism
- educational programs
- amateur and semi-professional astrophotographers
