On the night of 27–28 August 2026, the Full Moon will pass deep into the shadow of our own planet.

From Finca Astronómica in the Region of Murcia, the eclipse will reach approximately 94% obscuration shortly before sunrise. At maximum, almost the entire lunar disc will be immersed in Earth’s dark umbral shadow, leaving only a narrow directly illuminated section.

And yes — this is where the famous red or “Blood Moon” appearance can happen.

During a lunar eclipse, the Moon does not simply disappear. Some sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before reaching the lunar surface. Our atmosphere filters and bends that light, allowing predominantly red and orange wavelengths to reach the eclipsed Moon — essentially illuminating it with the combined light of Earth’s sunrises and sunsets.

Because this is a deep partial lunar eclipse rather than a total eclipse, we cannot promise that the entire Moon will become uniformly blood-red. Its actual colour depends on atmospheric conditions and can range from dark grey and copper to orange or deep red.

But with around 94% of the Moon inside Earth’s shadow, this is about as close to the visual drama of a Blood Moon as a partial eclipse gets.

And we’re making a whole night of it.

🌕 THE NIGHT BEGINS WITH THE FULL MOON

The experience starts on the evening of Thursday 27 August, when the almost exactly Full Moon rises above the landscape shortly after 20:20.

A Moon this low on the horizon often appears enormous and can take on beautiful yellow, orange or red tones as its light travels through a much greater thickness of Earth’s atmosphere.

This first spectacular Moonrise is not yet the lunar eclipse — the actual eclipse happens later during the night — but it gives us the perfect beginning to an extraordinary night of lunar astronomy.

Then, as darkness falls, we move into the rest of the sky.

Telescopes, guided astronomy, planets and deep-sky observations continue through the night before Earth’s shadow finally begins its journey across the Moon in the early morning.

The evening experience

Join us for a special edition of our complete Astronomy Night at Finca Astronómica.

We begin before sunset and experience the rising Full Moon together before moving into our normal programme of astronomy, dinner, guided observations and telescopes.

You’ll discover why the Moon changes colour near the horizon, explore its surface through telescopes, learn how lunar eclipses work and spend the evening observing the wider night sky with our astronomy team.

This experience includes our evening Astronomy Night only and finishes during the night.

It does not include the early-morning eclipse observation.

This is the big one.

Join the complete Astronomy Night in the evening, watch the Full Moon rise, enjoy dinner, astronomy and telescope observations and then stay overnight at Finca Astronómica in one of our simple astronomy-support accommodation units.

In the early hours of Friday 28 August, the Finca comes back to life for our Eclipse Fiesta.

Hot drinks.

Night-time snacks.

Telescopes.

Planets.

Astronomers who are far too pleased to be awake at four in the morning.

And above us, Earth’s shadow slowly beginning to consume the Full Moon.

The penumbral eclipse begins at approximately 03:23, followed by the unmistakable beginning of the partial eclipse at approximately 04:33.

From there, we watch the transformation develop for more than an hour and a half.

More and more of the Moon disappears into Earth’s shadow.

The eclipsed surface may become grey, copper, orange or deep red as sunlight filtered through Earth’s atmosphere reaches the Moon.

Then comes the climax:

🌕 Exact Full Moon: approximately 06:18

At maximum, almost 94% of the lunar disc will be inside Earth’s umbral shadow.

Only a thin directly illuminated portion remains while the enormous shadow of planet Earth stretches across almost the entire Moon.

Meanwhile dawn begins to develop around us.

The eclipsed Moon descends toward the western horizon as the morning sky brightens, eventually setting at approximately 07:38 while the eclipse is still in progress.

It is astronomy on a completely different timescale: from sunset, through the night, into eclipse and sunrise.

🌘 OPTION 3 — BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE MORNING

Come specifically for the eclipse

Already staying somewhere nearby?

You don’t need to spend the whole night at the Finca to join us.

Our Eclipse Morning admission is designed especially for people staying in hotels, holiday accommodation, campsites or camper parks around Cartagena, Murcia, the Mar Menor and surrounding areas.

Arrive at Finca Astronómica during the early hours of Friday 28 August and join our astronomy team specifically for the eclipse.

We’ll settle in with hot drinks and night-time snacks, explain what is happening above us and follow the eclipse as Earth’s shadow moves progressively across the lunar surface.

You’ll also have the opportunity for telescope observations and observations of the pre-dawn planetary sky as conditions allow.

The clearly visible partial phase begins at approximately 04:33, building towards the spectacular 06:12 maximum, when almost 94% of the Moon will be immersed in Earth’s shadow.

Then we’ll remain with the Moon as it sinks towards the horizon and the Finca moves from night into dawn.

There is no overnight accommodation included with this ticket, making it ideal if you’re travelling to us specifically for the eclipse or sleeping elsewhere nearby.

🌍 WHY DOES THE MOON TURN RED?

A lunar eclipse happens when the Sun, Earth and Moon align, with Earth directly between the Sun and the Full Moon.

Earth blocks the direct sunlight that normally illuminates the lunar surface.

But Earth also has an atmosphere.

Sunlight passing through that atmosphere is scattered and refracted. Blue light is scattered much more strongly, while red and orange wavelengths travel through the atmosphere and are bent into Earth’s shadow.

That reddish light can then illuminate the eclipsed Moon.

In a way, during a lunar eclipse we are seeing the light from all the sunrises and sunsets around the edge of Earth projected onto the Moon at once.

That is the science behind the famous Blood Moon.

On 28 August, the eclipse from Murcia is technically a deep partial lunar eclipse, not a total lunar eclipse. Around 94% of the Moon will enter Earth’s dark shadow, meaning we expect a spectacular contrast between the remaining bright portion and the deeply eclipsed lunar surface.

The exact shade of the Moon cannot be predicted in advance — Earth’s atmosphere gets the final vote.

And frankly, that’s part of the fun.
